Easton Choral Arts Society, MD

The Easton Choral Arts Society (ECAS) is a premier community choir based in Talbot County, Maryland, USA dedicated to excellence in choral music and artistic expression. Founded in 1977 by Florence Ruley, ECAS has grown into a vibrant ensemble of about 60 non-auditioned singers performing diverse and dynamic repertoire, from classical standards to contemporary compositions. ECAS is also known in its community for frequently presenting major choral works, most notably Carmina Burana, Bach's Magnificat, Mozart's Solemn Vespers, and Vaughan Williams' Sea Symphony, often collaborating with professional musicians, orchestras, and soloists. In the past with its former chamber ensemble, the Chesapeake Chorale, members have enjoyed performing and touring internationally to countries including Italy, Spain, Germany, Austria, France, England, and Wales.

Now led by Artistic Director Alexis Ward, ECAS continues to enrich the region’s cultural life through inspiring performances, collaborative projects, and community engagement. Recent initiatives include revitalizing the Choral Scholars Program, which provides scholarships and leadership opportunities for high school and college students, as well as a commitment to diversifying the choir’s repertoire, including a concert entirely featuring female composers. ECAS also released its first professional music video, Wheels of a Dream, in collaboration with the Chester River Chorale. The choir is also thrilled to begin traveling again for the first time post-pandemic and looks forward to presenting Dan Forrest’s Creation both in North America and Great Britain this year. ECAS is supported by grants from the Maryland State Arts Council, the Talbot County Arts Council, the Midshore Community Foundation, and numerous generous donors. Rehearsals and concerts are currently held at Christ Church in Easton, where ECAS fosters an inclusive and welcoming environment for singers of all backgrounds.
