Cantata Singers of Elmira, NY
Founded in 1964, the Cantata Singers have spent over six decades weaving choral excellence into the cultural fabric of Upstate New York. Based in the Finger Lakes region, the ensemble is defined by a dual commitment to artistic rigor and radical accessibility, offering three free concerts each season to ensure that top quality performances of world-class music remains a gift for all.
While the group’s foundation is built upon the historical masters—with particular reverence for the works of J.S. Bach—their current repertoire breathes with the sounds of the 21st century. The choir frequently performs modern luminaries such as Dan Forrest, Ola Gjeilo, Eric Whitacre, and Elaine Hagenberg, alongside Pulitzer Prize-winners Jennifer Higdon, Samuel Barber, and Aaron Copland.
Deeply rooted in the community, the Cantata Singers extend their reach beyond the concert hall. Through frequent performances at community events, retirement homes, and other non-traditional venues, they bring the healing power of song to those who need it most. This spirit of local storytelling culminated in the landmark Story Music Project, a two-year, grant-funded initiative that commissioned 14 original works inspired by the lived experiences of Finger Lakes residents. Whether premiering brand-new commissions or reviving Baroque classics, the Cantata Singers remain dedicated to bringing joy to all through choral music.
